Our focus

Why Milford Foundation invests in young people and how we create lasting impact

Why we focus on young people

Supporting young people is one of the most powerful ways we can create lasting change.

The transition from school to further education, training or employment can shape a young person’s future. We invest in the support, skills and opportunities young people need to overcome barriers and build secure and fulfilling lives.

Our vision is for every young person in Aotearoa New Zealand to have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their starting point.

The challenge

Many young New Zealanders face barriers that can make the transition to adulthood more difficult. Rising living costs, wellbeing challenges and unequal access to opportunities can affect their ability to succeed in education, employment and life.

That’s why we invest in organisations that understand the needs of young people and are helping them build positive pathways for the future.

“Young people across the motu can be the unapologetic voice and generation of change.”

What we aim to achieve

We focus our funding on three priority areas: education equity, secure financial futures, and resilience, agency and leadership. Through this support, we aim to create meaningful, lasting outcomes for young New Zealanders.

Education equity

From school through to vocational and tertiary study, we fund programmes that help young people access education, stay engaged in learning and reach their potential.

“The Milford Foundation represents hope, opportunity and trust. It feels like a community that genuinely wants to uplift young people and give us the chance to create better futures. Knowing that a whole organisation wants to invest in my journey motivates me to work harder and stay focused.”

Secure financial futures

By supporting initiatives that build financial knowledge and capability, and create pathways into meaningful employment, we help strengthen young people’s long term financial security.

“The scholarship lifted not just financial pressure, but doubt. It has helped me feel truly seen, valued, and capable.”

Resilience, agency and leadership

Through funding for programmes that strengthen wellbeing, build confidence and develop life skills, we support young people to navigate challenges and shape their own futures.

“It’s not just the money. We’re making connections, and learning. It’s more than just a degree that will get you success – it’s about finding happiness and giving back to our community.”

Through our funding priorities, we aim to help young people access opportunities, build confidence and skills, and create secure, positive futures, regardless of their starting point.
