Short Story Awards

We are thrilled to sponsor The Sunday Star Times short story awards for 2021, in it’s 38th year alongside Penguin Books. These awards are among New Zealand’s most prestigious and established writing prizes and have helped launch the careers of many well-known writers.

The Milford Foundation is delighted to have helped reinvigorate the awards by broadening the categories to include best emerging Pasifika writers alongside the category of best emerging Maori writer.

What makes these awards so special is the opportunity it offers writers to be exposed to a much bigger, and far broader audience than they would normally reach.

We have a clear purpose to invest in the future of New Zealand. The short story is a challenging form – but proves something profound and enduring can be said in relatively few words. We believe our purpose fits well with our support for the youth, Māori and Pasifika categories in this year’s competition and are excited to read the entries.
