The Milford Foundation aims to help strengthen the future of the communities within Aotearoa, New Zealand. Our granting pillars are youth, education, environment, and one-off crisis assistance. Step 1 – Contact us:

If you are considering making a bequest, we’d love to hear from you. When you contact us, we will:

  • Listen to your wishes and answer any questions.
  • Provide clarity on what types of gifts we can accept.
  • Explain our focus areas and how your gift will make a lasting difference.

Step 2 – Consult with a professional:

We recommend working with a lawyer, or Will provider when creating or amending your Will. This will help to ensure that your assets will be distributed exactly as you intend, with no misinterpretations. During your meeting, you will discuss the type and size of your bequest. Common types include:

  • Fixed amount bequest – A specific sum of money left in your Will.
  • Percentage-based bequest – A gift expressed as a percentage of your estate or specific assets.
  • Residuary bequest – Whatever remains in your estate after all debts and other gifts have been distributed.
  • Specific bequest – A particular asset.
  • Contingent bequest – A gift that only takes effect if certain conditions are met. (e.g., if another beneficiary passes away).

Suggested wording

Below are sample clauses you can share with your lawyer. Please note these are samples only and you should seek your own legal advice to ensure that your Will reflects your own circumstances and wishes.

  • General Bequest: “I give and bequeath the amount of $____to Milford Foundation, an incorporated charitable trust (Charities Registration Number CC58088), located at Level 12, 50 Albert Street Auckland 1010, to be applied for its general charitable purposes.”
  • Percentage Bequest: “I give and bequeath ___% of the total value of my estate to Milford Foundation, an incorporated charitable trust (Charities Registration Number CC58088), located at Level 12, 50 Albert Street Auckland 1010, to be applied for its general charitable purposes.”
  • Bequest of a Residue: “The residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, wherever situated, I give and bequeath to Milford Foundation, an incorporated charitable trust (Charities Registration Number CC58088), located at Level 12, 50 Albert Street Auckland 1010, to be applied for its general charitable purposes.”

Step 3 – Let us know:

If you have included a gift to the Milford Foundation in your Will, we would love to thank you. However, if you would prefer to remain anonymous, we will respect your wishes.

Step 4 – Review Regularly:

Life changes often and these may require updates to your Will. We recommend reviewing your Will regularly with your lawyer to ensure it continues to reflect your wishes and best interests.
